If you are still reading – cool, sorry for the harsh start, but if you are new to work from home internet marketing then there are a couple of things that you need to understand.
Here is a quick break down of the stuff that you will need to know about;
Research: You will need to do plenty of research in your business, but in two different areas
- Researching your niche, products, your customer, their buying frame of mind and the keywords that they use when they are in this frame of mind.
- The other part of work from home internet marketing that you need to research are the people that you are dealing with and taking advice from. This industry is full of really great people, but there are also some complete ratbags. Luckily a quick search through Google will quickly reveal a person’s reputation faster than you can say. To give you a hand we’ll be adding people and sites that we like and that have helped us along the way too.
Time: Time is important for two reasons;
- If you want to work from home internet marketing, then you need to be aware of your time constraints and be a little more organized and motivated than if you had to go to an office. On the other hand, you also need to know when to stop working and have a life.
- The other thing with time is that unless you are paying for your traffic (PPC and the like) it is going to take a really long time for things to get going. That is something that they don’t tell you when you start – actually, most programs come off as though you place one article and you can retire from the proceeds of that article. Gotta tell ya – it just doesn’t happen that way – sorry.
Cost: While there are ways to do internet marketing that do not involve a monetary cost, they involve a huge time cost.
That’s fine if you have all day to work and are productive for those 8 hours or so.

But if you are anything like us, your family commitments have to take priority and so while the idea of working a solid 8 hours a day is appealing it is impossible. Now I could put all the kids into day care 5 days a week, and hire someone to look after them after school to get my 8 hours, but there are two reasons why I don’t.
- Child care costs, and when you have 4 kids, child care costs lots – I could spend $300 a week on childcare and work for 8 hours a day writing articles, building backlinks, yada yada that would pay for that childcare…. kinda defeats the purpose of working doesn’t it?
- And to put the kids into day care defeats the whole purpose of me staying at home – we want the best of both worlds for our kids, day care education on some days, ‘fun’ with Mom on other days – so if I worked 8 hours a day 7 days a week nobody wins and I may as well get a regular job!
So to balance both and make our work from home internet marketing business as efficient as possible we need to either;
- outsource stuff – which costs money or
- be prepared to work harder for longer – which costs time.
Relationships:You are going to be building relationships with people so be nice and consider every move that you make and thing that you write. It is such a short step from marketer to spammer that you may not even realize that it has happened.
The Learning Curve: Chris and I have been work from home internet marketing for a year in real time – but in actual work time and achievement we are probably only at the stage that people who have been doing this for six months are at. This is largely because of the sheer amount of information that we have had to digest over the year.
When we started I knew how to write articles for paper based publications and surf the net. Chris knew how to check the emails and, well, he knew how to check emails.
So our learning curve has been massive from re-learning how to write for the Net, learning about how all powerful Mr Google works, to keyword research, market research, web 2.0 properties, HTML and getting traffic but by golly, we are doing it!
Oh, and we have finally learned to setup and build our own site – something that if you are serious about setting up a work from home internet marketing business you will need to learn to do if you don’t already. Pssst, quick tip – the sooner you learn to do this – the better!
