Choosing A Niche

One of the first things that really begins to get people tied up in knots is choosing a niche and how important it is to your internet marketing.

It is kind of like asking someone to choose a favorite song, book or movie of all time. There are just so many possibilities.

Do you go for a niche that you know makes money but that also has a massive amount of other people in it?

Do you pick a niche that you are passionate about?

Or do you look at choosing a niche which may have fewer people marketing it, but that also has fewer people looking for your products?

There are three niches that are absolutely proven to make people serious money.

In fact at a recent conference of ‘super-affiliates’ up to 90% of the most successful marketers in the world had made their money in these three niches.

  • Health
  • Wealth
  • Love

Easy huh?

But when you examine these niches more closely there are soooo many topics and products that are included in them.

Lets just think of the health niche – apart from Cancer, how many health topics can you think of in the next 10 seconds?

Ready….. Set ….Go!

….and stop.

How did you do?

I got eyesight, hearing, impotence, yeast infections, aging, acne, coughs, general health, supplements, memory, asthma, diet, fitness, muscle building, pregnancy, grey hair, STD’s, back pain, neck pain, constipation, hemorrhoids and cysts.

In the Wealth niche you can have the make money online, Forex Trading, Internet marketing, MLM…..

In the Love niche you have dating, get your ex back, finding love, attracting men, attracting women…..

So what makes these niches so profitable?

Have a close look at them.

What do they have in common?

They all stem from problems that people are more than willing to look up online to get relief from. Many of these are problems that people need a solution for but that they don’t necessarily want to talk to a stranger about, that conventional medicine just hasn’t worked for, or that they can quietly work on in their own time.

It is entirely possible to make a great income just by focusing on one of these big niches and concentrate on marketing different products within that niche. For example; You could do separate campaigns for a yeast infection cure, an ovarian cyst cure and an anti aging supplement.

Likewise in the Wealth/Make Money Online sub-niche you could market 3 different internet marketing programs.

But what if you don’t want to market any of these niches?

This is where choosing a niche becomes a bit more difficult and takes some research.

To begin with you need to work out which markets will be the most profitable for you, there are three ways of doing this;

1 – Go to Amazon.com

Go to the book section and search for your chosen topic. Let’s say ‘Dog Training’

Over to the right of your results you will see a box with ‘sort by relevance’ on it.

If you click the drop down arrow, you will see that you can sort by bestseller. Do this.

You will probably end up with a screen that looks like this;

What we want to look for is the number of reviews that a book has had.

Because only 4-5% of buyers will actually review a product this gives us some indication of how many of these books have sold. Ideally when choosing a niche we want to look for Amazon books or products that have more than 40 reviews.

With each book in this screen shot having more than 100 reviews this shows that there is definitely an online demand for the dog training niche.

2 -  Ask Google;

Type in dog training into Google search and this is what you will likely see.

Now take a look at the listings in the column down the right side of the page – loads huh?

These are all paid advertising. If people were not making money from these paid ads then they wouldn’t be advertising here, so a rough rule is – the more ads, the better the chances of your niche being a profitable one.

3 – Ask Dummies.com.

You know those books like Computers for Dummies, or Parenting for Dummies?

Well, books take a lot of time and expense to create so if the Dummies group has created one, then you can pretty well guarantee that it is profitable to do so. Let’s do a search on their site for dog training…..

OK, so we have not one book on dog training, but 34 results!

Think we may be onto a winner with this dog training thing?

Now it’s your turn.

Give it a try with a topic or niche that you might like to promote. You may just surprise yourself!

Til next time…..

  • Good advice guys! I’ve actually started using the Amazon trick since lately I’ve been getting bored of the usual ClickBank choices. I think Adam Short from Niche Profit Classroom came up with that one.

    Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve personally never felt unable to pick a niche. There’s so many to choose from! If you feel torn between two niches, just pick one and go with it and save the second one for your second site.

    After slogging through a bunch of niches that really don’t do anything for me personally, I’ve come to appreciate the value of picking a niche that you are passionate about.

    Hey Clayton, nice to see ya!
    Yeah I know what you mean. Our first site was about Chicken Coops simply because the figures looked great on paper. By article 20 Rach was so birdbrained I thought that we’d have to put her in the coop! (She’s not here, so I think that I’ll get away with that comment for now!)
